Circuit City in Death Throes, Slated for Liquidation
You might have seen our earlier coverage of Circuit City's impending implosion and supernova. Circuit City was given until January 16th to find a buyer to save itself from financial ruin (aside from the Mexican tycoon who has already sunk a lot of money into it). After attempting to woo various Arabian princes and Russian oligarchs, Circuit City is now faced with liquidating their assets and closing up shop. 567 US locations will be throwing fire sales, and then boarding up their windows for good.
On the one hand, I feel little sympathy for Circuit City because they've spent years uglying up the urban landscape with their monstrosity, Palace of Soviets-style architecture. But, I'll admit that one thing uglier than a Circuit City store is an abandoned Circuit City store. Fast forward five years and the emptied shells of Circuit City's once thriving empire will be crumbling ruins filled with squatters.
If we have to deal with one more major chain going under, our local shopping centers are going to look like scenes straight out of Escape from New York-except with dead Petsmarts and Home Depots. I'm not worried though. I can handle the denizens of future abandoned mini-mall and megachain clusters. I've played Fallout 3.
On a more positive note, Circuit City's calamity might just spell liquidation sale. We're keeping an eye open for the sale, and we'll let you know what we find. I've been meaning to buy an external hard drive for months now. Circuit City's failure will be a trip to the gadget smorgasbord for me.
If you're not sure which gadgets to look for bargains on, you can find the latest and greatest smartphones, netbooks, LCD TVs, and MP3 players on our review site. Happy hunting.
