DisplaySearch Explains When to Expect OLED in Our Homes

We were very disappointed that we were told to expect so many OLED displays at CES (organic light emitting diodes at the Consumer Electronics Show, for those of you who hate an overabundance of acronyms) and we actually saw so few. Where was the OLED revolution we were promised?

Apparently we were just a decade too early according to a new study by DisplaySearch that predicts OLED will be a $6 billion industry by 2018.

Actually, the good news is that you won't have to wait for it to get that big. DisplaySearch expects OLED technology to become widely available in 2011 and increase from there. That's great, except it's two years after they told us that the first time. Refer to the DisplaySearch "roadmap" at the top of this post to find out when to expect OLED manufacturing from the major corporations.

Naturally we would like to get excited at the prospect of actually having an OLED display. After all, manufacturers have been telling us for years that we would soon have wallpaper made from OLED and displays so thin they would disappear when viewed from the side. We both know this hasn't happened yet, but don't give up hope just yet. If the findings of this study prove to be true, we just might get our OLED TVs ... in a few years. Of course, OLED won't be found in just TVs either. Expect to see the technology in everything from cars to display advertising.

I guess we have to wait until 2018 to get a suit made of OLED panels, but the wait WILL be worth it.
