Samsung Joins Prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability World Index

Samsung Electronics is one of 33 new additions to the prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSWI), joining Coca Cola and Johnson & Johnson. Along with the 33 additions, 33 companies lost their slots, leaving the total at 317. Among the losers were National Grid, Mitsubishi Estate and SABMiller. The DJSWI includes the best-in-class economic, environmental and social performers of the world’s 2,500 largest companies.
Market index specialist Dow Jones, together with index provider STOXX and sustainable investment company SAM, coordinate a range of tables ranking companies according to criteria including code of conduct, environmental reporting and philanthropic efforts.
"The annual review of the DJSI family is based on a thorough analysis of corporate economic, environmental and social performance, assessing issues such as corporate governance, risk management, branding, climate change mitigation, supply chain standards and labor practices," the companies said in a statement.
Francois Vetri, head of communications for SAM noted sustainability performance plays a significant part in the process. He added, “Companies that don't improve their performance every year could be deleted if their competitors have more aggressive targets. You have to be in the top 10 percent of each sector. Thus, a company that is dropped from the index hasn't necessarily performed badly but rather its peers performed better.”
Samsung Electronics is a global market leader in 60 electronics categories including TVs, DVD players, cameras and camcorders. Samsung promotes the company’s commitment to the environment:
“That's why we carry out a wide range of environmental activities all around the world. We're leaders in recycling e-waste and designers of some of the most energy-efficient electronics products on the market. Everything we do is guided by our focus on the "greening" of manage-ment, products, processes, workplaces, and communities. Our green management policy sets some of the highest environmental standards for workplace operations, and design and manufacturing processes.”
TopTenREVEIWS congratulates Samsung Electronics for their place on this year’s Dow Jones Sustainability World Index.
