Toshiba Gets Closer to Producing OLED Wallpaper
Remember the part in Fahrenheit 451when Mildred is immersed in the parlor room where three walls are covered by TVs? In the 1960s when the book was made into a movie, the concept of a wall-sized TV didn't convert too well and looked ridiculous. But today some major manufacturers are actually making progress in developing paper-thin, wall-sized TV panels for your home.Toshiba, Sony and GE are working on ultra-thin (think wallpaper) OLED panels that can be used to convert the walls of a room into an instant TV screen. We've seen OLED technology in action at CES and even PMA, so we know it's a possibility. However, despite the breakthroughs in the paper-thin TV technology, Toshiba says it's years from commercial production. But just imagine, you could change the color and entire atmosphere of an entire room instantly.
The biggest problem is price. The manufactures say they need to find a way to mass produce it cheaply. OLED technology is still too new and too expensive to hold up to mass demand, but there may be an option to print large quantities of OLED panels on conventional printing presses used to coat plastics. If it works, it would be about 10 times cheaper to produce the panels.
OLED has a world of possibilities and hopefully we'll be able to see it sooner rather than later.
