Ups and Downs in the Tech Industry

There's still too much debate over whether or not we're in a recession, though most of us have the nagging feeling that we probably are. Regardless of what you call it, things aren't going as well as they could.

For the most part, this "economic downturn" hasn't affected the tech industry; for heaven's sake, the 3G iPhone just sold 1 million handsets in 3 days. But today The New York Times reported some bad news for two of the biggest players in the tech world: Google and Microsoft.

It's not like these two tech giants posted losses, but they both failed to meet expectations, which drove down stock prices and weakened investors' faith in the companies.

There is speculation over whether the weakened economy affected Google and Microsoft. There may be some credence to the idea since the performance was partly due to poor interest rate returns.

But it's also hard to believe that the economy is affecting the tech industry too much. Right next to the story about Google and Microsoft, The New York Times also posted two other articles: one about growth in PC sales, and another about double-digit increases in online shopping because people don't want to burn gas to go to the store in person.

It's interesting that both of these benefits can appear at the same time as disappointments at Google and Microsoft. In the end it probably means that both Google and Microsoft will be alright. As if either of these big boys have anything to worry about.
